Our Story

Rewire Community was born on December 3rd, 2012, from a vision, that women coming together in joy and support of each other is a powerful way to create community. Co-founded by Yamini Dixit, Roohi Agarwal and Shailaja Dixit, we first shared thoughts on One Billion Rising (14th February, 2013), as a symbolic nod to the global movement to end violence against women, with close family and friends, showcasing dance and art, but with a fire!

From there on, we started working on the ground, doing different sessions such as book-clubs, hikes, art, basketball, dances, music, theater, etc., with the aim of connecting back with the self and building healthy relationships. Very quickly, and magically, we saw barriers breaking and friendships emerging, people coming together simply to be in that moment with each other.

As these sessions picked up pace and popularity, we learnt that a strong community looks to give back and support another. Thus, donations poured in, and Rewire Community started identifying grassroots projects to channel these resources towards. Through our volunteering efforts, we have had the opportunities such as conducting blanket drives and food packing drives for local shelters, sponsoring the Pink Bus project in Nepal, aiding sanitary napkin distribution in Kenya and funding sexual abuse awareness workshops in India.

Rewire Community is now a registered non profit in California and looking to make a deeper impact locally. We continue to drive programs to build healthier relationships, focusing on the prevention and intervention space with gender-based violence, specifically interpersonal violence. With our survivor relief efforts and cultural outreaches to our neighborhood and our local community organizations, we are actively engaged in building safe spaces and supporting information and education to prevent and allay cycles of violence and abuse in our communities. We believe together we can all create waves of change.
